Device developers tend to focus on the FDA approval process – PMAs and 510(k) clearance – while overlooking another major challenge: getting insurers to cover the device. The main struggle for medical device companies may be not be earning FDA regulatory clearance, but rather securing reimbursement from CMS and private payers. Manufacturers need to understand how reimbursement influences access, and how payers and providers evaluate clinical evidence, pricing, and payment before adopting technology. As the reimbursement landscape transitions from fee-for-service to the new pay-for-performance/quality paradigm, medical device manufacturers need to be aware of potential impacts this shift may have on industry as well as the drastic changes in purchaser/company relationships. Demonstrating this combination of economic and clinical value of your company’s product is essential to a successful reimbursement strategy.
